Family Parenting Parenting Milestones

Posted by Cindy Hobbs on June 28th, 2007

There are many parenting milestones that will occur during a child's lifetime. Some of those milestones occur before the child is born or at home. There are many other milestones that will occur at a daycare center and the parents are likely to miss many of those. Ultrasound photographs will be the first milestone that is reached in the life of a child and another milestone will be shared by both parents when they hear the heartbeat of their child for the first time.

The parenting milestones that will occur at home will be reached when a child sleeps through the night for the first time. Some parents consider the first diaper change to be a important milestone in their lives. Other milestones will occur when the child makes the transition from drinking from a baby bottle to sipping through a slot in a toddler cup. The first time that a child eats solid food is a tremendous milestone that a child will reach and parents wait patiently for this moment for a very long time.

The parenting milestone that will be reached at a daycare center will occur when the parent is separated from their child for the first time. It will depend on how the parent reacts to the separation to be able to determine how comfortable the child will be once this one in a lifetime milestone has been achieved. Some parents find the idea of leaving their child to be a monumental task, and completing the milestone without emotion is almost impossible.

Some parenting milestones are wildly celebrated events. When a child cuts the first tooth, there is normally a great deal of fanfare over the occasion. Some parents will take photographs to establish a memorable record that can go in a baby book that they have maintained since their child was born. The birth certificate will be the first piece of legal documentation that a child receives and will be a milestone that will establish the child's identity in the world.

When a child graduates from kindergarten, a magical milestone has been reached. Their child achieves a boost in confidence and feels good enough to be a teacher's helper. When children have parts in school plays, parents feel another milestone has been reached and may even think that their child is growing up too quickly.

As the child excels in sports and receives excellent grades, parents will begin to check off the milestones that they created during the pregnancy. Many evenings were spent creating these milestones and as each one of them are achieved the parents feel that they are achieving a dream of a lifetime.

When they see their child graduate from high school they feel totally blessed and know that a very great milestone has been reached. When they see a well-balanced child who is happy with the life that they lead, they will know that they have accomplished all of the dreams that they established for their child so long ago.
