Do Parenting Classes Help?
Posted by Peter Donahue on March 4th, 2007
There is often a misconception that good parenting is a natural instinct that just happens all of its own accord from observations made in the past. Nothing could be further from the truth. To get better results, parenting skills may be required that are structured and which may require parents having to take parenting classes where the approaches necessary for good parenting can be taught.
There Is More to Be Learnt
It is the duty of parents to admit that they do not possess all the required knowledge, and that need to become better informed and equipped for the enormous task they face. Parenting classes will definitely provide advice as well as information to bring up children more effectively, and will teach parents what to expect of children at different ages and learn to handle their behavior problems. They will learn about the best way of disciplining the child, how to handle teenagers and get all the low-down on schools and education.
Through parenting classes parents can also become acquainted with other parents, share parenting ideas with them, learn from each other's mistakes, and come up with innovative ideas. It is also a place where other helpful skills such as reflective listening and techniques of positive discipline are taught.
Knowing child development could differentiate between considering parenting as a stressful, confidence-sapping and puzzling experience, and learning to enjoy children by understanding why they act the way they do and being able to deal with such behaviors. Parenting classes will also contribute towards positive parenting so that parents shower love, warmth, respect and learn to show consistency as well as being able to communicate well and empathize with their children, all of which have been proven to be very beneficial to child-parent relationships.
There are several online parenting classes available that are not only very convenient, they are also often more affordable that other classes. There are new classes starting every week that also provide professional guidance by experts to teach parents respectful, democratic as well as non-punitive parenting styles. For a fee that is less than a single visit to a counselor, parents can take an eight lesson online parenting class and reap all the accompanying benefits such as dispensing with babysitters and not having to listen to boring lectures.
With online parenting classes, one can complete lessons at a pace of one’s own choosing and the classes are self-paced, so one does not need to commit specific times for studying the lessons. Some of the classes offer person-to-person coaching that adds to the assistance that is offered to the challenged parent.
